Growing up, my most fond memories was visiting abandoned places with my brother.  To this day, if opportunity presents itself, I bring my camera and take a few pictures.  These are not my work ofcourse, but I hope you enjoy the visual beauty and maybe it brings fond memories of your own adventures.

Estas não são apenas fotografias de bailarinos trazendo a sua fantasia e criatividade a um mundo frequentemente indiferente, apressado e cinzento. Estas são também declarações de amor de um pai aos seus filhos – a utilização da câmara para captar o mundo e as pessoas através dos seus olhos.

É um mundo riquíssimo, o das crianças. E foi ao observar Hudson, o filho de três anos, que o fotógrafo Jordan Matter se inspirou para criar esta série de fotografias.

Hudson brincava com um autocarro de brinquedo e não precisou de mais nada para criar uma elaborada fantasia onde viajantes apressados tentavam apanhar o autocarro 77 para a Austrália. «Ele reagia com alegria aos acontecimentos de um mundo que eu não conseguia ver ».

Isto obrigou-o a pensar por que razão não era capaz de detetar esse mundo que se manifestava nos gritos de alegria do filho como uma presença tão poderosa:

O que acontece ao entusiasmo, à habilidade de estar completamente presente no momento? Por que motivo estes puros momentos de paixão são tão frequentemente substituídos pelo cinismo, aborrecimento e indiferença?

Enquanto brincava com o meu filho, pensei em criar fotografias que mostrassem o mundo através dos seus olhos. As pessoas nessas imagens estariam vivas e focadas no momento, celebrando todos os aspetos e emoções do dia-a-dia.

Pouco tempo depois, Matter foi assistir a um espetáculo de dança e descobriu imediatamente que tinha encontrado as pessoas certas para o ajudar a montar esse mundo.

Os dançarinos são contadores de histórias. São treinados para expressar paixões com os corpos. Criam com frequência um mundo de fantasia. Dão vida ao que a maioria de nós sente mas que, por falta de aptidões artísticas ou atléticas, é incapaz de exprimir fisicamente.

Matter passou três anos a fotografar dançarinos em todo o país, sentindo-se cada vez mais humilde «perante o entusiasmo pelo seu ofício». E o resultado final é maravilhoso:

Jordan Matter é um fantástico fotógrafo – conheci-o sobretudo pelo extenso portefólio dedicado às «corajosas mulheres nova-iorquinas» que se deixaram fotografar enquanto exerciam o seu direito ao topless. Esse conjunto de fotografias deu origem a um livro, Uncovered.

Na origem desse trabalho esteve a ação de um movimento social que defende que a mulher tem o direito de circular nua da cintura para cima com a mesma naturalidade dos homens.

A associação fornece aconselhamento legal (mais apoio moral) a todas as mulheres dos Estados Unidos e Canadá que desejem usufruir desse direito.

Chama-se TERA – acrónimo de Topfree Equal Rights Association, designação traduzida pela Wikipedia da seguinte forma: Associação De Direitos Iguais da Liberdade da Parte de Cima –delícia de tradução.

Nem todas as mulheres em topless fotografadas por Jordan Matter eram jovens, bonitas e elegantes segundo os padrões que nos são impostos todos os dias pela moda e pela publicidade. Ele interpretava essa semi-nudez como demonstrações de carácter e independência. E todas eram reais.

Uma dança para ti

Este é outro extraordinário trabalho que deu também origem a um livro, Dancers Among Us, «uma celebração da alegria no dia-a-dia».

A elegância e flexibilidade destes homens e mulheres contrasta em absoluto com a monotonia e previsibilidade das ruas e situações, como se a sua arte tivesse poderes de alquimista e conseguisse transformar o betão em ouro, a monotonia em júbilo. Mas Matter não se fica pelo efeito de contraste: nas imagens captadas em jardins ou na praia, seres humanos fundem-se com a Natureza em redor, a ela regressando.

E depois temos o amor incondicional:

Criei estas imagens para Hudson e a sua irmã mais pequena, Salish. Os meus filhos são tudo para mim; os meus sonhos para eles são enormes. Espero que tenham longas e saudáveis vidas, que encontrem companheiros que os amem, carreiras que os preencham e, se desejarem, experimentem as alegrias da paternidade.

Mais importante, quero que se libertem da auto-consciência em excesso e descubram a profunda felicidade que é viver uma vida de paixão. Desejo que encontrem a serenidade necessária para que estejam sempre verdadeiramente presentes. E estas fotos transmitem estes sonhos de forma mais poderosa do que as palavras.

The Bowlus Road Chief is possibly the most beautiful caravan (or trailer, if you’re American) that I’ve ever seen, it’s an obvious competitor for the Airstream, which has been the defacto polished aluminium home-on-wheels since the 1930s.

Interestingly, the chief designer of the Airstream was a man named Hawley Bowlus – the same man whose name adorns the caravan you see here. Originally named William Hawley Bowlus was an engineer, designer and aircraft builder who taught Charles Lindbergh to fly and was responsible for building the Spirit of St. Louis – the first plane to fly non-stop across the North Atlantic.

Bowlus was designing trailers long before the name Airstream was ever mentioned, sadly he wasn’t the best at sales or marketing and his original company was floundering before it was taken over by his friend, Wally Byam. Byam came up with the Airstream name and partly due to the marketing, partly due to the looks and partly to do with the fuel efficient design – the Airstream became an icon.

The Bowlus Road Chief is an attempt to take the traditional Bowlus design back to its roots. The beautifully appointed interior is well-matched to the exterior, the design is jaw-droppingly beautiful and the gleaming aluminium is clearly the child of an aeronautical mind.

Each of the aircraft grade aluminium panels in the Bowlus Road Chief is hand cut, each rivet is hand riveted and every step of the construction process is painstakingly executed to ensure maximum longevity. The trailers aren’t cheap at $100,000 each but the long list of appointments and careful attention to detail go a long way towards explaining the price tag.

This amazing shot was captured last year by photographer Denis Budkov in an ice cave near the Mutnovsky volcano in an area of northern Russia. Known for an abundance of precipitation the area is often covered in several meters of snow and ice that cover mountain streams like this creating vast caves that look like something out of a science fiction movie. This particular cave was nearly 300m (980 ft.) long and several photographers in Budkov’s group also snapped a few amazing shots. The photographer also captured this jaw-dropping photo of some tourists in front of a volcanic explosion earlier this year. The power of depth of field, right? (via Russia Travel Blog)

From 2003 to 2010, landscape artist Charles Jencks developed this amazing project entitled Cells of Life. It was completed as part of Jupiter Artland, a privately-owned sculpture park in Edinburgh. The project includes eight landforms and a connecting causeway developed within the incredible outdoor space.

The foundation for Jencks' creation was based on the concept of the life of a cell, as well as the cell division process called mitosis. He sculpted hill formations into layered spirals, merged sections of land together with bridges, and organized the complete layout so that from overhead, it "presents their early division into membranes and nuclei, a landform celebration of the cell as the basis of life."

Founded by Robert and Nicky Wilson, Jupiter Artland is committed to nurturing artists by offering them opportunities to create sculptural work along the Wilson's 100-acre span of land. A visit to the site is a creative adventure and the website explains, "The artworks are landmarks, events, confrontations on a journey of discovery." So, although visitors are provided with a map of the area upon arrival, they are encouraged to explore and discover the land, and the art, with great anticipation of what might present itself around that next grassy knoll.

I moved into a apartment studio without storage room. Durante seu discurso no Festival de Televisão de Edimburgo, o ator Kevin Spacey chegou à conclusão de que os telespectadores mais jovens não veem a diferença entre assistir a um programa de TV, um filme ou o YouTube.

O astro protagonista de House of Cards, o mais famoso seriado produzido pelo Netflix, explicou aos tradicionais executivos de TV, presentes na palestra à memória de James MacTaggart, o seguinte:

“Se assistimos a um filme no televisor ele deixa de ser um filme por não o assistirmos no cinema? Quando assistimos a um programa de TV no iPad, ele deixaria de ser um programa de TV?

O dispositivo onde assistimos o conteúdo e a duração deste é irrelevante para as crianças crescendo agora: para elas não há diferença alguma entre assistir ao Avatar num iPad, o YouTube no televisor ou conferir o último episódio do Game of Thrones no computador. O conteúdo e seu enredo por si só continuam sendo os mesmos.

Rótulos são inúteis, exceto, talvez para agentes, produtores e advogados que usam tais rótulos para conduzir negócios. As redes de TV e os estúdios têm que aprender a adaptar-se, apreciando a maravilhosa oportunidade que está sendo dada a eles no momento: aqueles que ignorarem a mudança, seja pela crescente sofisticação da narrativa, seja pela areia movediça trazida pelo avanço tecnológico, serão deixados para trás.”

Spacey pediu aos executivos para que não cometam o mesmo erro da indústria fonográfica, dando aos telespectadores maior controle sobre em que aparelhos os filmes e seriados favoritos poderão ser assistidos em vez de limitar onde o potencial público poderia apreciar o conteúdo.

Complementando o Kevin, vou além: podemos notar que um filme não foi bem na bilheteria ou o seriado foi cancelado por baixa audiência quando alugamos ou mesmo compramos o respectivo Blu-ray (ou DVD) e, antes de o filme ou seriado começar, há toda uma burocracia de assistirmos à trailers de outros filmes e/ou seriados da distribuidora antes de explorarmos o menu dessa mídia física para aí sim, finalmente, configurarmos os idiomas e dar o play.

Quem tem o hábito de visitar a locadora do Paulo Coelho já tem acesso ao filme depois de baixado e, qualquer coisa, vai atrás da legenda e/ou o áudio adicional necessário para o imediato consumo. Isso para quem sabe usar o download ilegal ao seu favor: há aqueles mais abonados que podem pagar pela TV por assinatura e preferem acompanhar seu seriado favorito no meio do horário nobre em meio às intermináveis reprises no restante do dia, pagando mais pelos canais extras que passem apenas filmes recém-saídos do cinema. Outros menos afortunados, que não querem saber da liberdade dada pela internet e não estão dispostos a gastar um tostão em assinatura de TV, preferem ser pacientes e deixar que a TV aberta exiba o seriado ou filme quando arranjar anunciantes, cujos longos comerciais têm piorado ano a ano.

O tio Laguna acredita que Kevin Spacey estaria defendendo o atual modelo do serviço Netflix, que, por uma módica assinatura (até o momento, R$ 16,99 mensais), nos disponibiliza por streaming vários seriados e filmes relativamente recentes para imediato consumo em qualquer dispositivo suportado, só dependendo de uma conexão à internet com alguma estabilidade. Um modelo de negócios como o Netflix basicamente corta o intermediário entre o telespectador e o consumo imediato do conteúdo, seja esse intermediário os horários fixos da TV, a cara mídia física ou mesmo as incômodas propagandas comerciais inseridas dentro do horário de exibição dos filmes e seriados. Não à toa tantos outros serviços semelhantes estão se popularizando.
