Newswire: Mad Max: Fury Road roars into IMAX theaters next week

by Danette Chavez
Alecbugg

Hmmmmm

If you somehow missed Mad Max: Fury Road during its original run in theaters this summer, you’ll have a chance at redemption when it hits IMAX next week. ComingSoon reports that George Miller’s film will have a weeklong engagement on IMAX 3D screens beginning September 11. The film’s image and sound quality has been digitally remastered to meet IMAX standards, all the better to see and hear the Doof Warrior with. We know 3D screenings can be hit or miss (we’re looking at you, The Hobbit movies), but Fury Road’s many explosions and extended car chases make it a perfect candidate for that kind of in-your-face capability. But it seems the movie was edged out of IMAX screens by Avengers: Age Of Ultron when it was originally released domestically. Hey, at least Age Of Ultron delivered on the 3D goods, right? (Not really.)

Hide the kids: Honest Game Trailers eviscerates Rocket League

by Owen S. Good

Some hilarious bits in there

Honest Game Trailers is back to lay down some brutal truth on another sacred cow of video gaming and, yeah, they're right about Rocket League, especially the part about being offered free on PlayStation Network.

I, too, did not know this was a "series" until the game was offered free on PSN launched in July. The comparison to 8-year-olds playing soccer also is spot-on, though I confess, that is my M.O. when I play, too.

If you want some more useful advice on how to play Rocket League, see this how-to from Charlie Hall that's full of sound tips, tricks and fundamentals. Or if you just want to vent your frustration, replay the Honest Trailer above. Other big-timers getting skewered by the series include Minecraft, Counter-Strike, Heroes...

Great Job, Internet!: Now you can make playlists based on shows coming up in your area

by Philip Cosores
Alecbugg

That's real nice

There are countless ways to have playlists made for you these days, whether Spotify creates one based on what you listened to last week or St. Vincent crafts you a mixtape based on a letter you wrote to her. Many listeners just opt for Pandora, which uses a seemingly random algorithm that some say is not really that random, but skewed to favor certain label groups with ties to the company.

So there is something certainly democratic about Bands Of The Week, a new website that uses Spotify to craft a custom playlist based on the bands coming through your town. Simply enter your preferred city and a date range, and the site opens a Spotify playlist featuring songs from all the acts playing within a healthy radius of your stated location. And if you don’t want to listen to both Boyz II Men and The Get Up Kids ...

Coming Distractions: Here’s the trailer for The Lobster, one of our favorites from this year’s Cannes

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

"A lobster is an excellent choice"

Looks hilariously awkward

The A.V. Club’s own Ignatiy Vishnevetsky called the The Lobster, the latest surreal, darkly comedic film from Dogtooth director Yorgos Lanthimos, “funny,” “unsettling,” and, “occasionally gruesome” when he watched it at this year’s Cannes Film Festival. Now, you can see for yourself—in bite-sized trailer form, at least—whether you’re as affected by Lanthimos’ tale of a sad-sack divorcee (Colin Farrell) who’s forced to attend a government-run resort where single people are transformed into animals by a relationship-minded bureaucracy. (The title comes from Farrell’s chosen form if he fails, which Olivia Colman, playing the resort’s polite-but-sympathy-free manager, notes is, “an excellent choice.”)

Besides Farrell, the film also features a host of other glum-looking romantic failures, played by the likes of Rachel Weisz, Ben Whishaw, and John C. Reilly, all looking suitably dejected in their government-issue ponchos and poorly tailored evening dress. Despite the ...

Newswire: Spotify announces its Song Of The Summer

by Kayla Kumari Upadhyaya
Alecbugg

WHAT!? GTFO

The summer is almost over, and if you’ve spent the season debating 2015’s Song Of The Summer with your friends, fear not: Spotify is here to settle the matter definitively. According to the Associated Press, the music streaming service has declared Major Lazer’s “Lean On” as the global Song Of The Summer using a highly complicated mathematical algorithm (it was just the top-played song globally this summer). “Lean On” also features MØ and DJ Snake on the EDM track. It’s worth noting that the single was released all the way back in March, so if any artists are eyeing the Song Of Summer spot for 2016, they better be in the recording studio now. Coming in second place worldwide, OMI’s “Cheerleader” (the original, not the belly-slap version) just narrowly missed the coveted Song Of The Summer spot. Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” featuring Charlie ...

Newswire: Game Of Thrones casts a Greyjoy

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

THEY CAST EURON??? This is exciting news

You know how it is. You’re a critically and commercially lauded premium cable TV show preparing to cook up a sixth season of sex and graphic fantasy violence. Realizing your recipe calls for a dash of murderous Ironborn pirates, you go to the cupboard, only to see that your supply is running low. Two of them haven’t been seen in a few seasons, while the main one isn’t in much of a state for pillaging or sailing around. You’re gonna need another Greyjoy.

Actor Pilou Asbæk has signed on for the sixth season of Game Of Thrones, playing vicious pirate Euron Greyjoy, uncle to the luck-deprived Theon. A cunning manipulator and vicious opponent, Euron is a prominent force in the novels on which the series is based, where the political intrigues of the Greyjoy family (including Euron’s brothers, the brutish Victarion and religious zealot Aeron ...

Japanese-Inspired Shoes That Literally Wrap Around Your Feet

by Martynas Klimas
Alecbugg

Yeah??

Furoshiki is the tradition of wrapping, holding, and carrying things in decorative pieces of cloth. Vibram Furoshiki, on the other hand, is their newest wrap-around shoe. Or, as they like to call it, the first wrap-around sole, since, technically, it’s a sole with wraps attached. They’re secured in place with Velcro patches, so putting the Furoshiki can hardly be any easier. They look comfy, too.

Vibram is also proud of their WaveGrip compound, which makes shoes lighter, as well as providing good grip on water sports surfaces. Of course, they’re even better for non-extreme sports use! The Furoshiki is a modern concept that’s much prettier than the footwraps used by certain armies (as late as 2013 in Russia), and which weren’t an actual shoe substitute.

Finally, three great card games to play instead of Cards Against Humanity

by Charlie Hall
Alecbugg

Oh hell yes, let's get some real games instead of that boring, unfunny, lame-ass game

The Indie Megabooth has become a fixture at PAX Prime, and this year its  lineup is better than ever. But it's not just packed to bursting with video games. It also has a sizeable area devoted to tabletop games, with 10 games (in various stages of completion) ready to play.

Here are three great card games that Polygon had an early look at. Each one is a great solution for a gaming group stuck in a rut, or for a party drifting wildly out of control.

Monikers

There are moments when you open a new tabletop game and instantly know that it will be in heavy rotation with your friends and family for years to come. I had that moment again when I cracked open Monikers for the first time.

It's a box full of...

Watch Halo 5: Guardian's amazing opening cinematic

by Ben Kuchera

Hot damn

What does it feel like to go into battle as a Spartan?

The opening cinematic for Halo 5: Guardians sets the stage as Fireteam Osiris drops into combat, and then follows the battle through one long, beautiful tracking shot showing the efficiency and power of the team.

This is a pretty effective introduction to the game. Halo 5: Guardians is coming to the Xbox One on October 27.

Acquisitions Inc., one of the most-watched D&D games of all time, goes live this Friday

by Charlie Hall
Alecbugg

JARED!!!!

PAX Prime is, first and foremost, a convention for fans of digital games. But these past few years it's also become home to tabletop experiences of all kinds. No event is more hotly anticipated than the annual one-shot Dungeons & Dragons play session with Acquisitions Incorporated, to be broadcast live on Twitch this Friday.

The Acquisitions Inc. game will be live this Friday, at 8:30 p.m. PT, and we'll embed the game live here.

Twitch and YouTube streaming has become incredibly important for the growth of D&D, lead designer Mike Mearls recently told Polygon, and the Acquisitions Inc. games were among the first to make performing D&D online popular.

Polygon sat down with Chris Perkins, principal designer for D&D at Wizards of the...

Newswire: Burger King wants to make McWhoppers, not McWar, with McDonald’s

by B.G. Henne
Alecbugg

Oh baby!

Hold on to your Happy Meals: Burger King turned to the New York Times and The Chicago Tribune to negotiate a truce with McDonald’s, flying in the face of generally accepted social norms. The temporary alliance is ostensibly to celebrate Peace One Day, and would manifest in a pop-up restaurant dedicated to serving up the “McWhopper,” which would combine ingredients from both franchises’ signature burgers (and likely several unstable elements perched on the lower-right corner of the periodic table).

Reflecting the equality of such an alignment, Burger King is proposing that the venture be situated in Atlanta, halfway between the companies’ respective corporate headquarters. Likewise, the pop-up restaurant would be staffed equally with McDonald’s and Burger King employees. Burger King also referenced special uniforms, but did not specify if such attire consisted of simply mixing and matching or the commissioning of a Harvey Dent-style ensemble for the occasion ...

For Our Consideration: 22 years in, Magic: The Gathering is the brainiest it’s ever been

by Steve Heisler
Alecbugg

Jared

A shouting match has broken out on the early morning streets of Park Slope, Brooklyn between two 9-year-old boys.

“This card sucks!” one says.

“Well yeah, but it’s not that bad,” says the other.

They’re politely discussing the merits of a Magic: The Gathering card from the game’s newest set, Magic Origins, and doing so at an unreasonable volume for a sunny summer day in a neighborhood known for its double-wide strollers, triple-shot espressos, and, especially at 8:30 a.m., its quiet. A small crowd gathers—other players ages 7 to 12, pushing their way to the front so they can see what all the fuss is about. They want to see the Magic card in question, Demonic Pact. What does this card say that would summon such outrage? “Owen sucks”?

It reads (paraphrased):

At the beginning of your turn, choose one that hasn’t been ...

Newswire: It’s Rumor Time: George Miller might direct Man Of Steel 2

by William Hughes
Alecbugg

Now we're talkin

After spending more than 15 years traversing the animated wasteland with Happy Feet and Happy Feet Two, director George Miller roared back into live-action stardom this summer with the smash success of Mad Max: Fury Road. But while Miller is presumably thrilled to finally have enough clout to start working on the purely hypothetical Babe 3: This Time, Nothing But Nightmares, he’s likely aware that you’re not really anybody in Hollywood until you’ve sacrificed your unique style on the altar of a big-budget superhero franchise, a milestone that he was brutally robbed of achieving when Warner Bros. pulled the plug on his Justice League movie back in 2007.

Miller might be getting another shot at spandax-clad stardom, though, if a rumor being floated by The Death Of Superman Lives: What Happened? director Jon Schnepp turns out to be true. Appearing on YouTube network Popcorn Talk’s DC ...

Guns found as Boston cops arrest two for threatening Pokemon Championships

by Owen S. Good
Alecbugg

They're probably pissed that Pokemon is Basically Dog Fighting and should be 100% illegal. Not the right way to go about it, but their platform makes sense.#BanPokemonFighting

Boston police arrested two men they say drove from Iowa to the city to carry out threats of violence on the Pokémon World Championships being held there this weekend. Firearms and ammunition were found in their possession.

Boston police said the two suspects — Kevin Norton, 18 and James Stumbo, 27, both of Iowa — had made threats against the Pokémon World Championships over social media. They were stopped at the Hynes Convention Center attempting to enter the event, they said.

The specific nature of their threats was not immediately clear. Police said private security officials became aware of them through social media and notified authorities on Thursday.

On Friday, the two men were stopped attempting to enter the event. They could...

Newswire: Hayley Atwell wants the title role in Doctor Who, internet is down for that

by Caroline Siede
Alecbugg

Yes. I am 100% down for this

Hayley Atwell is best known for playing a character from the ’40s, but in real life her social media savvy is second to none. She’s the kind of person who can turn Dubsmash into an art, then a competition, then recruit megastar Chris Evans into her winning video. And that’s not even mentioning her commitment to adding diversity to the second season of Agent Carter, her affinity for pranks, and her love of cake.

And now Atwell has charmed the internet all over again with her declaration that were she to play any character on Doctor Who, she’d want to be the Doctor.
