Audio-only horror game Vanished out now on iOS

by Sophie Prell
Where we're going, we won't need eyes to see audioonly horror game Vanished out now on iOS Vanished by developer Pixel Heart is a recently launched iOS game that like, doesn't need your fancy graphics, man - in fact, it has none. Vanished is an audio-only horror game, similar in concept to Deep Sea.

Vanished places you in a world without light, with no memory of how you got there or why the world is the way it is. But don't worry: Where you're going, you won't need eyes to see. The game uses your iOS device's accelerometer, compass and touchscreen for its interactions - you shake the device to attack, while movement is handled by turning the device to face the direction you want to walk and tapping the screen.

"We think that imagination is the most powerful hardware a game needs," Pixel Heart's website reads. "The game itself is only part of the experience. It's your imagination that creates the world in witch [sic] you play." Pixel Heart also labels the game as an "experiment" for now, one they hope to make bigger and more complex.

Experiment or no, you can download Vanished from iTunes for free until October 1 as part of its launch sale, after which it will sell for $0.99.

The 10 Most Beautiful Mobile Games

by Taylor Casti

Feed-twFeed-fb

As Xbox One and PS4 battle it out in the next round of console wars, mobile gaming continues to mature as a platform. The iPhone 5S's 64-bit graphics ensure that new games will look stunning when you're gaming on the go

Amazing graphics aren't the make-or-break factor in a beautiful game, however — especially on mobile devices. While so many developers focus on making games look real, others create beautiful, unique and even alien worlds through striking silhouettes and illustrations

As indie games become more and more popular, some game designers are favoring a more artistic approach when creating a game world. Whether it's for their minimalist designs or beautifully illustrated details, we couldn't take our eyes off these beautiful mobile games for Android and iOS Read more...

AMD unveils Radeon R9 and R7 series video cards, unifying graphics code for PCs and consoles

by Jon Fingas

AMD unveils Radeon R9 and R7 video cards, unifying graphics code for PCs and consoles

Graphics cards aren't normally our go-to choices for audio processing, but we may have to make exceptions for AMD's just-unveiled Radeon R9 and R7 lines. The R9 290X (shown above), R9 290 and R7 260X (after the break) will support TrueAudio, a new programmable pipeline that enables advanced audio effects without burdening a PC's main processor or a dedicated sound card. Not that the range will be lacking in visual prowess, of course. While the company isn't revealing full specifications, it claims that the R9 290X flagship will have five teraflops of total computing power versus the four teraflops of the previous generation. The boards will ship sometime in the "near future," with prices ranging from $89 for an entry R7 250 to $299 for the mid-tier R9 280X. AMD isn't divulging the R9 290X's price, but pre-orders for the card will start on October 3rd.

The firm has also revealed a new programming interface, Mantle, that makes the most of the Graphics Core Next architecture found in many of its recent processors and video chipsets. Developers who build the low-level code into their games should get better performance from GCN-based devices without having to re-optimize for each platform -- a title meant for Radeon-equipped PCs should still behave well on a PlayStation 4 or Xbox One, for instance. Mantle will debut on Windows through a December update to Battlefield 4, and should spread to other platforms in the months ahead.

This Animation Makes Stephen Hawking's Ideas Easier to Understand

by Casey Chan

Stephen Hawking. Theoretical Physicist. Cosmologist. Smart guy. Beyond genius, actually. Hell, very probably the best brain that us humans have right now. But so much of his intelligence is hard to grasp for less wrinkled brains like us. This animation, made by The Guardian as part of its Made Simple series, breaks down the basics of some of Hawking's ideas about black holes, singularity, gravity, physics, Hawking Radiation and so forth. You might get a little smarter? [The Guardian via Brain Pickings]

It can be more useful than trying to keep track of our ideas by scribbling them on paper, and can aid in manipulating and generating concepts.

We've compiled a list of 24 mind mapping tools to help you organize, summarize and visualize information, with both free and paid versions available to suit any budget or requirement. The tools mentioned are either browser- or desktop-based, with a selection of mind mapping mobile apps at the end of the article for use on iOS and Android devices Read more...

White Chocolate Is A Big, Fat Lie

Tokyo Game Show breaks another attendance record

by Jessica Conditt
Tokyo Game Show attracted 270,197 attendees this year, breaking its own record again - 2012 hit 223,753 people, while 2011 had 222,668 and 2010 had 207,647. TGS ran from September 19 - 22, and this year, both of its public days brought in more than 100,000 visitors each, another record number.

This year TGS expanded from eight halls to nine and was able to include extra exhibits, such as the Indie Game Area, Romance Simulation Game Area and Cloud Gaming Area. Smush them all together and you get the Indie Romance Simulation Cloud Gaming Area, which sounds like it could be the next breakout genre from Japan.

Next year's TGS is scheduled in the same space at Makuhari Messe, from September 18 - 21.

by Lauren Indvik

Marissa Mayer took the stage with talk show host Charlie Rose at IAB's Advertising Week conference on Tuesday to discuss her strategy for Yahoo (key word: "mobile"). Toward the end, the talk turned to gender and leadership. Rose asked Mayer whether she hass felt the impact of her gender on her career, and about the story behind her head-turning Vogue photo shoot.

The photo, which appeared in Vogue's September issue, featured Mayer arranged upside-down on a garden chaise. The pose, combined with the body-hugging, cobalt blue sheath dress she's wearing, draws attention away from her face and to her body — inappropriate for the CEO of a major tech company, many said Read more...

by Fran Berkman

It's hard to erase the stain of embarrassing social media posts once they've hit the web. For minors in California, however, the task just became a little bit easier.

Gov. Jerry Brown signed a bill into law on Monday that requires websites to both remove content and provide notice of the removal when a requested by a minor (under age 18). This includes social media sites

“This is a groundbreaking protection for our kids who often act impetuously with postings of ill-advised pictures or messages before they think through the consequences," Steinberg said in a statement released Monday. "They deserve the right to remove this material that could haunt them for years to come." Read more...
