EA's Need for Speed reboot will hit the road in November

EA has announced that the rebooted Need for Speed, first announced in May, will be out on November 3.

The open-world game, described by EA as "the definitive Need for Speed experience," takes place in Ventura Bay, and will be roughly twice the size of Need for Speed: Rivals. It features five overlapping stories "built around real-world icons," and progression through the five requisites of racing mastery: Look good, go fast, drift hard, stay true to your crew, and stay away from the cops.

More info about what's coming is up at NeedForSpeed.com.

NBA Live 16 launching Sept. 29 with Live Motion, new physics-based movement

by Samit Sarkar

NBA Live 16 will be released Sept. 29 on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One — the same day as 2K Sports' NBA 2K16, developer EA Tiburon announced today during EA's E3 2015 press briefing.

Live Motion, a new feature that has been in development for two years, is intended to eliminate the feeling of being stuck in scripted animations. It combines run-time physics with motion capture to create "thousands of new animations," according to Tiburon's Sean O'Brien.

Tiburon is also adding a new face-scanning app with technology called GameFaceHD. A live on-stage demo took less than 10 seconds to generate an in-game model after a face scan using a smartphone's selfie camera.

Premature Evaluation: Lego Worlds

by Marsh Davies

Will Lego Worlds escape the penises that plague so many other games with user generated content? It’s hard to see a system they could enforce which might effectively root them out without adversely affecting the freedom to create and share worlds. It’s a problem Minecraft has survived, however, without much damage to its image among parents - perhaps because there are just more interesting things to do. Spore probably couldn’t say the same.

Each week Marsh Davies squints at the ambitious blueprint that is Early Access and struggles to work out which bit goes where, and how many pieces are missing, before giving up and, most likely, building a big old cock instead. This week he’s been playing Lego Worlds, TT Games’ attempt to channel the charm of Minecraft’s freeform construction at the behest of their brick-wielding Danish overlords.

Finally, Lego have made a game about Lego rather than the Lego brand. Though they quite possibly only managed that because someone else went and did it first. Every dismayingly poor TT Games platformer I’ve played has only further convinced me that Markus Persson already made the best possible Lego game – and as just one facet of that multifaceted monster, Minecraft. Its shadow looms large over this entire enterprise. Though it’s an enterprise that seems to be getting wise to this fact: some of the recent releases under the Lego brand are, I am told, interesting and ambitious in their own right, and not just quirky minifig rehashes of film properties, draped over a crap but childproof platformer framework. So perhaps I shouldn’t be surprised that Worlds, too, feels interesting and ambitious – albeit extremely early in its development. There’s not much about it at the moment that Minecraft hasn’t covered in mods, but it’s nonetheless immediate, generous and jolly, its focus shifted away from Minecraft’s complex recipes and resources to simple collection and unfettered creation.

Fifa 16: a host of small changes hope to make a big impact

Fifa 16

If FIFA games were named like Friends episodes, 13 would be The One With the 360° Dribbling, 14 would be The One With Precision Movement, and 15 would be The One With All the Emotion. This year? It’s a bit harder to summarise.

For FIFA 16’s lead gameplay producer Aaron McHardy, the snappy pitch is “no stone unturned,” an allusion to his team’s exhaustive efforts reexamining every feature, mode, and system. “It’s a marketing problem. How do you communicate to your fans what you’ve done?...We want to go into every part of gameplay and touch everything to ensure it’s balanced and consistent as we can with the fewest bugs we’ve ever shipped with, so we can let all those big innovations shine through.”

That’s not to say there are a lack of additions, however, and no-touch dribbling is one of them. On an Xbox One pad, holding RB and flicking the right stick while running opens up the hips to throw off opponents. During my two-hour hands-on I use indecisively haired Brazilian Neymar to link exaggerated sleight-of-foot feints as the ball trickles forward independently, throwing in a few RT presses that lurch his whole body sideways like a bloke suddenly remembering he's left his phone in the pub.

Fifa 16 2

Passing With Purpose is another alternative means of attack. Holding RB and A pings a fast ball to feet and exploits quickly closing gaps, giving a new weapon to those undone by the slow charge-up of a traditional pass. Oh, and shooting’s improved, too, especially with regards to what McHardy calls “magic moments.” Subtle changes to momentum and a smattering of fresh animations make successful volleys feel extra venomous, and stepping into the ball at pace results in a fierce thwack and truer trajectory. The controller vibrates during particularly sweet shots like a cat rewarding you with pleasant purrs. Introducing new options down the sides and centre, FIFA 16 welcomes self-expression.

But it, like American politics or a seriously complicated game of tic-tac-toe, is structured with an intricate series of checks and balances. To counter Passing With Purpose, for instance, defenders are now more eager to race in and challenge from behind. "We watched videos of some of the best slide tacklers in the world launching into slides from distance on a slick pitch and winning possession,” says McHardy. “Not everyone can do that, so there’s an attribute that governs whether they have access to those animations." While stronger passes speed the game up, aggressive defenders prevent them becoming magic bullets.

And to offset the lightning-quick likes of Ronaldo and Messi, a new swing-step animation prevents them getting easily turned. This feeds through to the crossing system: previously, wingers needed only sprint to the byline and launch a box-bound hit-and-hoper, but with more nimble blockers able to goad wingers using dummy tackles and immediately regain their feet after a slide, they’re now more of a contest. It’s remarkable how transformative a few small changes can be—like tightening a string on a piano and changing the whole tune.

Fifa 16 3

If this all sounds a bit daunting, FIFA Trainer’s rolling tutorial can help. During a given scenario you’ll see up to two contextual hints floating above your player’s head. Near the box? Consider an RB+B finesse shot. At the byline? Try a whipped cross. “Tutorials are something we’ve not been historically good at on FIFA,” admits McHardy. “Over the last few years we’ve done research and discovered the best way to play the game is with your buddy on the couch: ‘A is pass, B is shoot’...And then as you get better you learn a little more. ‘OK, now you’ve got those down you can try a through-ball.’” The thinking is, the better you are at the game, the more enjoyment you’ll get from it.

FIFA 16’s other milestone is, of course, the introduction of 12 international women's teams, playable in Match Days, Offline Tournaments, and Online Friendlies. All comprehensively head-scanned and mo-capped, they’re no token inclusion. McHardy tells of how EA Canada originally tried female heads on men’s bodies with slightly horrifying results, so they had to rethink their entire approach to player physiques. That goes for both genders, so spindly ladder-man Peter Crouch now looks less like he’s been stretched vertically in Microsoft Paint.

While there’s no snappily titled marquee feature à la the Impact Engine or 360° Dribbling this year, there are so many systems at play now that even reevaluating one sends ripples throughout the game, and EA Canada edge ever closer to parity between them all. This is a game with a hundred tiny changes, rather than a handful of big ones, the inverse of death by a thousand cuts. Life by a thousand plasters, I guess? Stick that on the box, marketers!

Know Your Lore: Alleria Windrunner

by Matthew Rossi

Most people who play World of Warcraft know who Sylvanas Windrunner is, and quite a few probably know who Vereesa Windrunner is, especially if they read War Crimes. But it’s been a while since we got to see Alleria Windrunner, unless you count a few jokes on loading screens. Now, however, she’s making an appearance in Hearthstone and so we get to talk about who she was, what she did, what her legacy was and is to this day.

Alleria fought in the Second War. Not much is known of her life before the war — it’s known she had two sisters, Sylvanas and Vereesa, and a brother named Lirath. As a Farstrider, Alleria was dedicated to the defense of Quel’thalas, and she defended it well — many Amani trolls died with her arrows in their hearts. As such, she found her skills in demand when her king was forced to honor his oaths.

When the orcs invaded Lordaeron, the high elves of Silvermoon wanted nothing to do with the fight, but they were bound to honor the request of the last descendant of the bloodline of the Arathi kings, Anduin Lothar. He held them to their ancient oaths, but their king, Anasterian Sunstrider, did not take the orcs seriously. He was less concerned with upholding his oath than he was with finally having it gone, and so sent only a token force to defend the humans. Alleria was one, a Farstrider who impressed Lothar and his second in command Turalyon with her skill as a tracker and a hunter. She and Turalyon grew closer, despite her people’s tendency to look down on humans as dangerous, short-lived savages. And she grew to realize that the orcs, far from a minor human problem, were a bloodthirsty Horde that could swallow the entire continent if left unchecked.

She warned her people, but they would not heed her — and her family paid the price.

When the orcs came for Silvermoon, their people suffered for trusting a Sunstrider. It wouldn’t be the last time, either. The Windrunner family, long established as a powerful force in high elven society, was nearly utterly destroyed. Alleria led her human allies under the command of Turalyon north, arriving in time to help save Quel’thalas itself, but too late for Alleria.

Orcs following Orgrim Doomhammer pushed deep into the forests of the high elven stronghold, threatening the very heart of their kingdom, Silvermoon itself. At the behest of Zul’jin and the Amani Trolls, his allies, Doomhammer and the orcs committed many atrocities upon the high elves, and the Windrunner family suffered more than most. Alleria’s brother Lirath and eighteen other members of her family died at their hands. Alleria quickly came to a simple decision — the orcs killed her family. Now she would kill orcs.

Alleria-Header03

For the rest of the Second War, Alleria was a woman possessed. Even hardened soldiers like Turalyon (who had grown to love Alleria during their time fighting in Lordaeron) were shocked by her brutality and disregard for orc lives. To Alleria, orcs were less than vermin, to be slaughtered at her whim. She managed to shame Anasterian (who realized too late that his unwillingness to really contribute to the war had only brought disaster upon his own people) and finally got the high elves to commit fully to the destruction of the Horde. A high elven fleet arrived off the coast of Lordaeron and relieved the besieged city when Doomhammer was on the verge of capturing it, and helped harry the Horde south to Blackrock Mountain and its ultimate defeat.

But the end of the war brought no peace for Alleria. While her sisters both fought to defend Quel’thalas, she now fought purely for vengeance. She couldn’t put the deaths of her family behind her — Lirath, her aunts and uncles, dead and gone. She hunted the orcs in the woods and wild places they’d fled to, and any orcs she encountered were lucky to survive and flee deeper. Many did not. Her relationship with Turalyon seemed over, a brief moment in the heat of the war swallowed up by the person she was now. Her sisters and other friends from the Farstriders could see that she was greatly changed, but none could deny that whatever she’d lost, her ability to strike down orcs was second to none.

As a result, when the Alliance fostered an expedition beyond the Dark Portal, Alleria was selected to go. Horde forces were raiding Azeroth for mystical artifacts, and the Alliance (mired in disagreement as it was) still recognized that the Horde couldn’t be allowed to regroup and prove a threat.

Before she left, she had an old family heirloom left to her by her parents broken down into three pendants, one for her and one each for her two sisters, a last gift and legacy for them. It’s impossible to say that what this meant, aside from the fact that behind her grief and rage there was still a deep and abiding love for her two younger sisters. In time, Sylvanas would become Ranger General, a position Alleria never held, and in that role would find herself defending Silvermoon from a foe even more devastatingly powerful and evil than the Horde.

Alleria-Header2

Alleria helped lead the Alliance Expedition during its quest to defeat the Horde of Draenor. She and Turalyon eventually rekindled their relationship when the Paladin shared with her his own pain and loss and grief over the death of Anduin Lothar, his failure to save the man who was his mentor and friend, and his ultimate realization that revenge could not bring the man back. Alleria confessed in turn that, having lost so many she loved, she couldn’t bear the idea of losing another — this had led her to push him away, and now it led them back together.

This may be when she concieved and bore Arator, her half-elven son with Turalyon. (We really have very little in the way of details about Arator’s life.) We know that Alleria sent her rangers off with Danath Trollbane to help rescue Kurdran Wildhammer, while she herself aided Khadgar and Turalyon as they confronted Deathwing himself in his lair to retrieve the Skull of Gul’dan. Ultimately, the Alliance Expedition defeated the Horde, but not before Ner’zhul dealt Draenor a death blow by using the magical artifacts he’d had stolen to open several portals to other realities. Khadgar used the Book of Medivh and the Skull of Gul’dan to seal off Draenor from Azeroth just in time to save the world they’d come from, but the entire Alliance Expedition, including Alleria, was trapped on the shattered world of Outland.

Since this time, no one truly knows what has happened to Alleria Windrunner. Her son hunts for his parents, her old friends say they do not know her fate. Does her appearance in Hearthstone presage the return of Alleria? If so, what would her reaction be — her sisters divided, her people gone over to the Horde that murdered her family?

'Mass Effect: Andromeda' coming holiday 2016

by Timothy J. Seppala

We've waited and waited for solid details on Mass Effect: Andromeda for what seems like an eternity and now we have a few more. The game launches next holiday season, to start. That's big enough on its own, but BioWare had even more to share from the stage of its press event here at E3 2015. Since it's using the Frostbite game engine pioneered by DICE, the game looks predictably gorgeous. It's in a new galaxy; the Mako is back; you're an N7 officer once again. You're playing as a human male or female, but not as the character seen in the trailer. BioWare says that Andromeda's "very much a new adventure" and that it takes place quite a bit after the events of Mass Effect 3.

The game will only be available for PC and current-gen consoles. And while the trailer was built with Frostbite, that wasn't actual gameplay you saw: The clip is the studio's target look for the game. So, while the engine is powerful and capable of pretty impressive results, you might need to temper your expectations a bit.

Check here for everything happening at E3 2015!

Lego Dimensions shows off Portal-inspired level at E3

by Charlie Hall

The team behind Lego Dimensions was on hand during the YouTube Live at E3 stream to show off Portal-inspired gameplay for host Geoff Keighley.

TT Games, veterans of past Lego series titles, explained for fans how the toys-to-life game used the game's peripheral pad for more than just holding toys. The pad actually functions as an input device, being used to move Lego minifigs between colored portals and to change the scale of objects in the game world.

Chell made her first live gameplay appearance, facing off against GLaDOS in the now classic Aperture Laboratories setting.

"For all intents and purposes," said a representative from TT Games, "it should feel like another Portal game. You’re just playing it with Legos."

The Long Dark trailer is a stark reminder that there are bears outside

The Long Dark is coming to the Xbox One! And no, that's not the sort of news we would normally take much interest in, but it comes complete with a new E3 2015 trailer, and so here we are.

The trailer doesn't show off any actual gameplay—for that, you should have a look at our Early Access impressions from October 2014—unless you count the underlying first-person snippets that actually tell the day-by-day tale of this journey as it's traced across the map. There's not a lot of "practical value" here, in other words, but I quite like how the story is so effectively told. It's bad, it's really bad, it's a little better, it's coming up Milhouse, and then this happens. This is basically the narrative arc of every survival game I've ever played.

The Long Dark is available now on Steam Early Access, and is half price for the next couple of days as part of the Steam Summer Sale.

Superhot E3 teaser is full of slow-motion swords and headshots

Superhot, the Kickstarter-funded FPS where time only moves when you do, showed off a brief teaser at E3. It's full of slow-motion so slow it's practically no-motion, plus swinging swords, spinning chains, and a few chunky headshots. Blessedly, the name of the game is only spoken once in the teaser, as opposed to the last trailer we saw in which it was repeated so often we all wished we could stop time.

Superhot is coming this year to PC. Watch the teaser below.

Lightsworn: Playing the Shockadin

by Mike Eng

With the recent announcement that flying will be coming to Draenor, everyone’s all astir with excitement! We’re going to have to earn our wings, though — flying will require the upcoming patch 6.2 meta-achievement Draenor Pathfinder. Two of the requirements for Draenor Pathfinder are Loremaster of Draenor, which means finishing all the major quest storylines in each zone, and Securing Draenor, which entails completing each level 100 Draenor “bonus objective” area at least once.

Now, I’m guessing there are at least a few Holy Paladins out there who want to fly, but they’re dreading all those quests and daily objectives because they don’t want to play Retribution. Shhh, you’re among friends, it’s okay to admit it. Just don’t tell Dan. Maybe you don’t have a good strength weapon. Perhaps you just simply hate playing melee. Or maybe your offspec is Protection, or even another Holy spec! (It’s not uncommon for Holy Paladins who do a lot of both PVE and PVP to have a dedicated spec for each.)

So how are you going to get through all those quests? Respec? Run heroics to pick up a strength weapon and some trinkets? Enlist one of your DPS friends and get them to kill everything while you tag along, healing the tiny amount of damage they’ll be taking?

Well, you could do one of those. But aren’t you forgetting something?

We’re Holy Paladins. We can do anything.

Meet the Shockadin.

150615_holypally_header_shattrath

The Shockadin is a Holy Paladin build that trades some of our healing power for the ability to do some legitimate DPS. Named after our signature healing spell, Shockadins use Holy Shock, Denounce, and Word of Glory to sear their foes with righteous indignation. It is not a true DPS spec, and we should never regard it as one. But it is absolutely a viable alternative for Holy Paladins who just want to quest or finish up their Securing Draenor achievements without having to hit things with a big stick.

The Build

  • Glyph of Holy Shock  Makes Holy Shock heal for less, but deal more damage when used on enemies. Straightforward. As you may have guessed, Holy Shock will usually end up being our largest source of damage.
  • Glyph of Denounce  One of our few purely offensive abilities, Denounce will be a solid #2 damage contributor behind Holy Shock. We’ll be casting Denounce repeatedly and shouldn’t ever get more than one stack of this glyph’s effect, but even a 0.5 second faster cast helps!
  • Glyph of Harsh Words  Normally, we can only spend Holy Power on Word of Glory/Eternal Flame or Light of Dawn. This glyph allows us to use Word of Glory offensively on enemies, giving us a much-needed third hard-hitting attack spell! It’s very important to note that this glyph does not work with the Eternal Flame talent, though.

150615_holypally_header_smv02

  • Sacred Shield  As mentioned above, Shockadins cannot take Eternal Flame, leaving Sacred Shield or Selfless Healer as our other level 45 talent options. You might think Judgment would be an important spell for Shockadins, therefore making Selfless Healer a natural choice. After all, Judgment is one of our few offensive abilities, and our Retribution and Protection buddies use it! Unfortunately, our Judgments deal almost no damage (about half as much as Denounce), and unlike other Paladin specs, they don’t generate any Holy Power for us. As a result, Judgment and Selfless Healer are lackluster options for Shockadins and should be avoided, making Sacred Shield the winner by default.
  • Sanctified Wrath  Of all our level 75 options, Sanctified Wrath is the only talent that converts 100% effectively to Shockadin DPS, increasing our offensive secondary stats and damage, and allowing us to Holy Shock every other cast. Holy Avenger is less effective than when healing since Shockadins have fewer ways to generate Holy Power — we won’t be casting Holy Radiance, and using Crusader Strike is a DPS loss that the extra Holy Power gain doesn’t make up for. Similarly, we simply aren’t generating and spending Holy Power fast enough to make Divine Purpose worthwhile.
  • Level 90 talents  Choosing a “best” Shockadin talent this tier is tricky. Against single targets, Execution Sentence will contribute the most damage. However, the Shockadin build’s most glaring weakness is a complete lack of AOE damage, making any fight against multiple foes a pretty painful experience. In fact, I have found that fighting multiple weak enemies (the type that would normally be mowed down with a few AOE hits) is actually more dangerous than taking on elite mobs! Because of this, Shockadins might find the precious AOE damage (and self-healing) from Holy Prism or Light’s Hammer to be more valuable.
  • Saved by the Light  Our other level 100 talents are designed to enhance our healing, which makes them mediocre Shockadin options. So we may as well go with the talent that might actually do something for us! A once-a-minute, automatic life-saving shield can certainly come in handy when out soloing, especially in some of the level 100 areas where elite enemies are wandering around.

150615_holypally_header_pitThe Rotation

Shockadins have a very simple priority system, since we only have a handful of offensive spells.

1. If you have 5 Holy Power, cast Word of Glory so further Holy Power gains won’t be wasted.
2. Cast Holy Shock, your level 90 talent, and Hammer of Wrath (once available), all on cooldown.
3. If you have 3 Holy Power, cast Word of Glory.
4. When you can’t do any of the above, cast Denounce.

Other tips and tricks:

  • Don’t be tempted by Judgment or Crusader Strike. They are DPS losses.
  • Make sure Denounce is bound to a comfortable key, because you’ll be casting this a lot.
  • Use Avenging Wrath’s massive DPS boost for difficult foes, or when you’re up against multiple enemies that you need killed quickly.
  • Always cast Sacred Shield before entering combat, and re-apply if it falls off while you’re still fighting.
  • Make frequent use of Rebuke and Fist of Justice to interrupt dangerous (or annoying) enemy spells, such as enrage effects or heals.
  • If there’s a group of enemies standing close together that you don’t want to fight all at once, talent into Repentance and incapacitate one of them until you’re ready to deal with it!
  • If you get in trouble, remember that Hand of Protection will make you immune to physical attacks, and won’t interfere with any of your Shockadin damage spells.
  • Shockadins may be capable of dealing out some good damage, but remember that we’re still healers! Don’t be afraid to stop DPSing for a few seconds to cast Flash of Light a few times if you need it.

150615_holypally_header_smv01The Gear

For the most part, Shockadins function just fine using their normal healing gear. However, there are a few adjustments we can make, if we have the spare equipment pieces available.

Spirit and Mastery do not increase our damage at all, so replacing items (especially trinkets!) that have these stats for ones with more Intellect or any of the other secondary stats will net you better DPS results. Don’t swap out a piece for one that’s more than 5-10 item levels lower, though — it’s not worth losing the extra Intellect. You can also feel free to break your Tier 17 item set, since the 2-piece and 4-piece bonuses only provide additional healing.

Finally, if you have a choice between a shield and an offhand of equivalent item level, go with the shield — enemies will be smacking you in the face, so the extra armor a shield provides can help. I wouldn’t go out of my way to acquire Shockadin-specific pieces, but if you have better optimized options sitting around in your bags already, why not use them?

Playing a Shockadin is a fun alternative for Holy Paladins, whether they’re questing through Draenor or tackling level 100 bonus objectives. We may not deal as much damage or kill things quite as fast as our DPS friends, but we’ve got unsurpassed durability on our side and can typically heal through whatever enemies can throw at us. We’re also great in groups for tougher areas like the Pit, where we can contribute decent damage and still toss out strong heals when required.

What about other PVE content? Can Shockadins hold their own in dungeons or raids against other DPS classes? Sorry to burst your bubble, but the answer is no. I took a trip through Raid Finder to test this. While my Heroic Blackrock Foundry-geared Shockadin did top the damage meters on single-target fights like Gruul, Oregorger, and Blackhand, I was doing comparable damage to players roughly 30-40 item levels lower than me. And on a multiple-target fight, our lack of AOE abilities would just make this difference even more severe.

That’s okay though. The important thing is that we can finish up our flying prerequisites while still playing our preferred talent spec. We should consider ourselves fortunate, really! Most of the other healing classes don’t have this luxury, and have to use actual DPS off-specs for questing, which they may not enjoy playing.

Which just goes to show that Holy Paladins are, as always, the best.

What a shock.
