Wave Motion as Inquiry: The Physics and Applications of Light and Sound-P2P

by Fisherman

This article has been published at RLSLOG.net - visit our site for full content.

This undergraduate textbook on the physics of wave motion in optics and acoustics avoids presenting the topic abstractly in order to emphasize real-world examples. While providing the needed scientific context, Dr. Espinoza also relies on students’ own experience to guide their learning. The book’s exercises and labs strongly emphasize this inquiry-based approach. A strength of inquiry-based courses is that the students maintain a higher level of engagement when they are studying a topic that they have an internal motivation to know, rather than solely following the directives of a professor. ”Wave Motion” takes those threads of engagement and interest and weaves them into a coherent picture of wave phenomena. It demystifies key components of life around us–in music, in technology, and indeed in everything we perceive–even for those without a strong math background, who might otherwise have trouble approaching the subject matter.

Silicon Valley Billionaires Award $22 Million in 'Breakthrough Prizes'

by EditorDavid
An anonymous reader quote The Guardian: The most glitzy event on the scientific calendar took place on Sunday night when the Breakthrough Foundation gave away $22 million in prizes to dozens of physicists, biologists and mathematicians at a ceremony in Silicon Valley. The winners this year include five researchers who won $3 million each for their work on cell biology, plant science and neurodegenerative diseases, two mathematicians, and a team of 27 physicists who mapped the primordial light that warmed the universe moments after the big bang 13.8 billion years ago. Now in their sixth year, the Breakthrough prizes are backed by Yuri Milner, a Silicon Valley tech investor, Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and his wife Priscilla Chan, Anne Wojcicki from the DNA testing company 23andMe, and Google's Sergey Brin. Launched by Milner in 2012, the awards aim to make rock stars of scientists and raise their profile in the public consciousness. The annual ceremony at Nasa's Ames Research Center in California provides a rare opportunity for some of the world's leading minds to rub shoulders with celebrities, who this year included Morgan Freeman as host, fellow actors Kerry Washington and Mila Kunis, and Miss USA 2017 Kara McCullough... Life sciences prizewinner, Joanne Chory at the Salk Institute in San Diego, was honoured for three decades of painstaking research into the genetic programs that flip into action when plants find themselves plunged into shade. Her work revealed that plants can sense when a nearby competitor is about to steal their light, sparking a growth spurt in response. The plants detect threatening neighbours by sensing a surge in the particular wavelengths of red light that are given off by vegetation. Chory now has ambitious plans to breed plants that can suck vast quantities of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere in a bid to combat climate change. She believes that crops could be selected to absorb 20 times more of the greenhouse gas than they do today, and convert it into suberin, a waxy material found in roots and bark that breaks down incredibly slowly in soil. "If we can do this on 5% of the landmass people are growing crops on, we can take out 50% of global human emissions," she said. The Mercury News published a list of all the winners, pointing out they were chosen from more than 11,000 entries (from 178 countries). And Wired notes that the top prize winners get $2 million more than Nobel prize winners.

This book is a Programmer’s Guide to the Mind. In it, we will attempt to do two things: We will try to explain how the mind works, and we will also show how a person can make it operate more effectively. If we compare the task of developing the mind to that of taking a journey, then this volume could be described as a combination road map and tourist guide.

Business Contracts Handbook by Charles Boundy-P2P

by moneyguzzler

This article has been published at RLSLOG.net - visit our site for full content.

If money is the lifeblood of business, contracts are the arteries that help carry it around the commercial body. Anyone in business is liable to have to deal with business contracts, but few are trained to do so. Even those that are trained may have experience in limited areas or in the distant past. But the right contract can make a vital difference, not just to recording and enforcing, if need be, the contract terms, but also in ensuring the agreement deals with the real issues and approaches them in a practical way. Finding help in this area is not easy, as the market tends to offer little between serious academic tomes on the one hand and student summaries geared to exams on the other. “Business Contracts Handbook” fills that gap, covering both the basics of contract law in an accessible style and using a thoroughly practical approach to understanding and negotiating the key terms in a business contract. If you have little prior knowledge, Charles Boundy’s many years of experience in drafting and providing guidance on business agreements of all kinds will enable you to acquire a working background quickly. If you have years of experience you will still benefit from a checklist, a reminder of what is important and why, and an easy reference to up-to-date language and drafting – there is always more to learn.

In antiquity and the Middle Ages, memory was a craft, and certain actions and tools were thought to be necessary for its creation and recollection. Until now, however, many of the most important visual and textual sources on the topic have remained untranslated or otherwise difficult to consult. Mary Carruthers and Jan M. Ziolkowski bring together the texts and visual images from the twelfth through the fifteenth centuries that are central to an understanding of memory and memory technique. These sources are now made available for a wider audience of students of medieval and early modern history and culture and readers with an interest in memory, mnemonics, and the synergy of text and image.

Boosting performance with shader binary caching in Qt 5.9

by Qt Dev Loop

Now that Qt 5.9 is getting closer, let’s take a look at a minor but immensely useful improvement to the basic OpenGL enablers that form the foundation of Qt Quick and the optional OpenGL-based rendering path of QPainter.

Those looking at the documentation snapshots for 5.9 may have already come across some new functions in the venerable QOpenGLShaderProgram. What is more, most internal usages in Qt have been switched over to the new API. What does this mean in practice?

As explained here, such shader programs will attempt to cache the program binaries on disk using GL_ARB_get_program_binary or the standard equivalents in OpenGL ES 3.0. When no support is provided by the driver, the behavior is equivalent to the non-cached case. The files are stored in the global or per-process cache location, whichever is writable. The result is a nice boost in performance when a program is created with the same shader sources next time.

How big is the improvement? It varies. Some drivers have already been doing some sort of caching for the past couple of years, while some others have similar features in the pipeline. However, the gains turn out to be quite significant in practice on devices that are out in the field right now:

image2016-11-21-152420

Do not read too much into the actual numbers. What is important is the difference between Qt 5.8 and 5.9. Also, a simple Qt Quick or GL-backed QPainter scene will definitely not use 10 programs, but as complexity grows, with Qt Graphical Effects and custom ShaderEffect items entering the picture, getting similar improvements does not look far fetched anymore.

In fact we gain something even on systems that employ shader caching already. Therefore every application’s startup and view switching times are expected to benefit with Qt 5.9 – without having to change anything.

Applications that use QOpenGLShaderProgram on their own can usually switch to the cacheable function variants by just changing the name in the function call. The change have to be a conscious decision, though, since some of the APIs change semantics when program binaries are used. Most notably, QOpenGLShader, addShader(), and removeShader() are incompatible with the program-level caching since they rely on individual shader compilation.

That’s it for now, stay tuned for more posts about exciting upcoming Qt 5.9 and 5.10 features.

The First Nazi by Will Brownell et al-P2P

by moneyguzzler

This article has been published at RLSLOG.net - visit our site for full content.

General Erich Luddendorf was one of the most important military individuals of the last century, yet today, one of the least known. One of the top two German generals of WWI, Luddendorf dominated not only his superior. Gen. Paul von Hindenburg, but also Germany’s head of state, Kaiser Wilhelm II. For years, Luddendorf was the military dictator of Germany. Ludendorff not only dictated all aspects of WWI, he refused all opportunities to make peace; he antagonized the Americans until they declared war; he sent Lenin into Russia to forge a revolution in order to shut down the Russian front; then he pushed for total military victory in 1918, in a rabid slaughter known as “The Ludendorff Offensive.” Luddendorf lost the War in 1918. Shortly thereafter, he created the murderous legend that Germany had lost this war only because Jews had conspired on the home front, in what he called a “stab in the back.” He soon forged an alliance with Hitler, endorsed the Nazis, and wrote maniacally about how Germans needed a new world war, to redeem the Fatherland. This savage man had staggering designs to build a gigantic state that would dwarf the British Empire, sweep across all of Africa, then the Middle East, Central Europe, Persia, even India. Simply stated, he wanted the world. His plans, person & ambitions were the prototype for his good younger friend, Adolf Hitler. All in all, Luddendorf was the key German, instrumental in both world wars & the Russian Revolution. He changed the 20th century beyond recognition.

Rocket League officially confirmed for Linux with the next update, a beta version that is

by liamdawe
Tags:SteamOS,Steam,Sports,Coming Soon,Beta,Action
Oh my! Rocket League has finally been officially announced as having an actual Linux release. The next update named "Rumble" will have a beta version for Linux.

It releases on September 8th, but remember, it will be a Beta.

Quote
Yes, it’s really happening! After several delays (and our sincerest apologies about that, btw), the SteamOS and Mac versions of the game will finally be available for download. An important thing to note, however, is that both versions are still considered “beta,” with a handful of known issues that we’ve detailed below. It should also be said that while other Linux platforms may work, the SteamOS version of the game is the only Linux client that we’re “officially” supporting during the beta period. Likewise, the Mac version may or may not work on older systems with an integrated video solution, but a dedicated GPU is highly recommended (Macs from 2013 and after should be okay).
Emphasis mine

They also state a few known issues:
- The correct store page for DLC purchased through the Showroom doesn’t show up for Big Picture users. This is a Steam client-specific issue that Valve will be fixing in an upcoming patch
- There are occasional crashes when exiting from a match to the main menu
- The statues in Urban Central do not display correctly
- You may experience intermittent blurring issues

See their big update on it here.

It's bloody great that they have nailed down an actual release for it, but having support only for SteamOS during the beta is a bit annoying (especially since I don't even use SteamOS any more). A beta is a perfect time to nail down support for normal desktop Linux, isn't it? I hope they don't continue that support status after the beta period.

Also, this update will introduce their micro-transaction crate/key model. Much like what Team Fortress 2 has:
Quote
Keys will be available for $1.49 individually, or in bundles of 5 for $5, 10 for $10, or 20 for $20.
Essentially, you may get a crate after a game and you need to buy a key to unlock it.

insert itshappening.gif here

Let's hope they don't delay it once again eh.

Fun fact: In our Release Calendar, I put it down as a best guess for the 7th, I was one day off!

North Korea Unveils Netflix-Like Streaming Service Called 'Manbang'

by BeauHD
North Korea has unveiled a set-top box that offers video-on demand services similar to Netflix. The service is called Manbang, which translates to "everywhere" in Korean, and allows consumers to stream documentaries about Kim Jong Un and other "educational" programs, as well as five live TV channels. "If a viewer wants to watch, for instance, an animal movie and sends a request to the equipment, it will show the relevant video to the viewer [...] this is two-way communications," according to NK News. It reportedly works by plugging the set-top box into an internet modem, then connecting an HDMI cable from the cable box to the TV. A very small number of North Koreans will actually be able to use the device as "only a few thousand [...] have access to the state-sanctioned internet, in a nation of 25 million people," reports New York Daily News.
