A Mesmerizing Stop-Motion Animation Showing Layers of Objects Being Slowly Ground Away With a Sanding Machine
In the mesmerizing stop-motion animation “Verschleif,” a block of wood, a camera, an animal skull, and other objects are slowly ground away, revealing the fascinating interiors of the objects. Artist Laurin Döpfner created the film by painstakingly grinding the objects with an industrial sanding machine, half a millimeter at a time, and photographing after each layer was removed. Döpfner posted the video back in 2010.

Photos That Pretty Much Sum Up SF's 4th of July Experience
If you stuck around the city for 4th of July, how would you describe the visual display happening overhead that night?
a) If I squinted hard enough every time I heard a muffled bang, I could almost see the fog turning a bright shade of pink for a second.
b) I sat on a hill, whopping at the fog, for an hour.
c) My neighbors spent a couple grand on (what I'm pretty sure were illegal) fireworks – thank god, otherwise I wouldn't have seen shit.
d) Thank god too for sparklers, which also burn below the fog line, and sometimes into my fingers.
e) We had fireworks displays?
Despite some lovely photos proving people did, indeed, send fireworks shooting over the bay, I felt more of a kinship with the small, growing meme on Reddit, where San Franciscans reported in from various neighborhoods with photos of their 4th of July "views." The above shot was titled "Coit Tower reporting in for Independence Day."
I also loved this one below, which ran with the subject line "We have such great views of the fireworks from Twin Peaks every year."
Just proving, once again, that we do things our own way here in San Francisco – which, during the summer months, really just means Karl's way.

Williamsburg diners eat bruised, stale, old food in dumpster for $50 a plate
Pretentious? Yes. Gross? Absolutely. But at least it was for a good cause.
The six-course meal in Williamsburg, the foodie world’s answer to dumpster diving, was organized on June 28 and 29 by a graduate student who charged eager gourmands $50 a head for the privilege. The dumpster dinner was meant to raise awareness about the amount of perfectly edible food that gets tossed every day, its organizer said.
“This was an interesting, boots-on-the-ground way to inspire people and engage them in a conversation about wasting food,” said Joshua Treuhaft.
To drive the message home, the food on offer was made of ingredients that were bruised, stale, or overripe, donated by stores or bought at a deep discount….
The menu included heirloom tomato gazpacho, carrot-green pesto on stale bread, and pickled kale stems.
The chef scrambled to come up with the menu because she did not know until a few days before the meal what the ingredients would be, she said. Treuhaft had the dumpster delivered to the street in front of her house so that she could prepare the six-course meal upstairs.
“There was no way we could have done any prep or cooking inside that dumpster,” said Celia Lam, who agreed to make the food in exchange for Treuhaft agreeing to donate the proceeds to the charity CulinaryCorps.
Since Treuhaft did not have a liquor license, he invited all of the diners up to Lam’s apartment to enjoy a cocktail before the meal.
“While we were eating, some cops came by and told some people who were sitting nearby on their stoop what to do, so it is a good thing we were not drinking,” Gordon said.
The dinner was part of a series of one-off dinners called the Salvage Supperclub, which Treuhaft said are an extension of his thesis on city gardening and a campaign to reduce food waste.
“We want to get our guests to stop being so snobbish and judgmental about the food they eat,” he said.
This was the first dumpster dinner and Treuhaft said it may be the last.
“It is a lot of work doing it inside a dumpster,” he said.
Grilled BBQ Chicken Pizza
You know how much I love the no-knead pizza dough recipe, right? I’ve been wanting to try it grilled because WHO WANTS TO PUT THEIR OVEN AT 500F in the summer??! Also, I’ve relied too heavily on the make it on a cookie sheet and get rectangular pizza method. This lady wants a round pizza. Once and for all. But then again, this lady loves the no knead recipe because it’s such a good set it and forget it situation. This lady thrives on a set it & forget it situation.
About an hour into the dough making process (it was just sitting covered in the window) I decided to invite new friends over for dinner. WHAT?! Try a new recipe on new friends?! Blasphemous. My point to all of this is to tell you that if I can take pictures while grilling pizza AND entertaining people ON A WEEKNIGHT, then there’s no doubt in my mind that you can pull this off in a snap.
BBBQ sauce as a base, chicken, red onions, red pepper, cilantro, PEPPER JACK CHEESE and corn combine for an amazing combination. It makes an amazing summer meal. It also solidifies new friendships….just sayin’!
And we’re off!
The first item of business is DOUGH. It takes about 2 hours to make the no knead pizza dough.
There’s a step-by-step photo instruction post here.
We divide the dough into 4 rounds. The toppings for this recipe make TWO BBQ Chicken pizzas.
I made four pizzas total. One plain cheese (for the kids) A corn, tomato basil number and two bbq chicken pizzas. Four adults, three kids and about 2-3 slices leftover
I got all my ingredients together, covered them and put the toppings in the fridge and let the dough sit out covered.
I had leftover rotisserie chicken from the night before. I shredded it up and mixed bbq sauce up in.
Are you ready to grill some pizza??!
One side of your grill will be the HOT ZONE. The other side will be the WARM ZONE.
Shape a pizza into a circle. If I didn’t have an audience and if I wasn’t trying to snap a million pictures without being rude, I would have a better shot. But you know…
The pizza will go onto the grill. Grill for about 3-4 minutes. Flip over and top you pizza with the toppings.
Yes I did throw some meatballs on the grill!
Move pizza to the Warm Zone and cook until cheese has melted and the edges are nice and golden.
It takes about 5-7 minutes. I actually like mine a little charred, so I went to about 9.
Top the pizza with cilantro and cut it up.
Enjoy a meal OUTSIDE!!
And feel proud of your work. You didn’t even have to turn the oven on!
Grilled BBQ Chicken Pizza
Note: There is a print link embedded within this post, please visit this post to print it.makes 2–10 inch pizzas
- no knead pizza dough (use half to make 2 pizzas)
- 1 1/2 cups barbecue sauce
- 2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
- 1/2 medium red onion, thinly sliced
- 1 1/2 cups pepper jack cheese, shredded
- 1 cup mozzarella cheese, shredded
- 2 ears corn
- 1/2 red bell pepper, diced
- 1/4 cup feta cheese
- handful fresh cilantro, for garnish
Preheat grill, making sure one section is on high and the other is at medium heat. In a medium bowl, mix chicken with 1/2 cup barbecue sauce until well combined. Set aside.
Shape each pizza into a 10 inch round and place on the hot section of the grill. Cook pizzas for 3-4 minutes (dough should not stick) and flip pizza over. Move pizzas over to cooler side of the grill and lay down about 1/2 cup barbecue sauce onto each pizza, making sure to leave about a 1 inch edge for the crust. Top each pizza with half the chicken, red onion, pepper jack, mozzarella, corn, red pepper and feta. Cover grill and cook pizzas for 5-7 minutes, or until crust is browned and cheese has melted. Take pizza off of the grill, top with cilantro and serve.
Google buses start using private security guards
Marlee Tichenorugh. i guess the next plan is to have ferries bring people from the east bay and sf to mountain view. maybe then the whales will protest.
Google has hired security guards to look out for the safety of its employees who ride buses from their homes in San Francisco’s Mission District to company headquarters in Mountain View, 35 miles away. Two men "dressed casually in jeans and wearing black ski hats" wearing tell-tale coily-corded earpieces and taking notes were spotted two days in a row standing near workers waiting for the shuttle bus, reports Reuters.
In previous weeks, Bay Area residents "angry over tech-boom gentrification" have broken a "Gbus" window, slashed its tires, and held protests in Oakland and San Francisco, reports SF Gate.
Some of the protests have been about Google's use of public bus stops to pick up workers. The city of San Francisco said it will begin charging Google $1 per day per stop.
In this video, a small Gbus encounters a group of protestors near Dolores Park.

Oreo Flavored Oreos
Marlee Tichenorwhat?
These oreos are “Blizzard Flavored”, but if you note that the Dairy Queen Blizzard on the package is full of ground-up Oreos, it’s a cookies-and-creme flavored Oreo. The Oreo is flavored with itself. It’s an Oreo flavored Oreo. Soylent Oreo is made of Oreos.

Recipe: Pumpkin Oat Pancakes
Marlee TichenorOMMM ALL PUMPKIN ALL THE TIIIIIIME
It’s that time of year when everyone is clammering for anything and everything made with pumpkin, and we may have just found the holy grail of pumpkin recipes via Cookie and Kate. These fluffy pancakes are gluten- and guilt-free and may just be the perfect fall breakfast.
You will need:
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 1/4 cup milk of choice
- 2 tablespoons coconut oil (or butter), melted
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice (about 1 small lemon, juiced)
- 1 teaspoon maple syrup (or honey)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 2 eggs
- 1 cup oat flour*
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
- 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves or allspice
In a small mixing bowl, stir together the pumpkin puree, milk, coconut oil (or butter), lemon juice and maple syrup (or honey). Beat in the eggs. (If your coconut oil goes back to its solid state at this point, just warm the mixture for short 20 second bursts in the microwave, stirring between each, until it is melted again.)
In a medium bowl, whisk together the oat flour, baking soda, salt and spices. Form a well in the center of the dry ingredients and pour in the wet ingredients. With a big spoon, stir just until the dry ingredients are thoroughly moistened. Do not overmix!
Let the batter sit for 10 minutes. You may want to thin out the batter a bit with a touch of milk or water. Heat a heavy cast iron skillet/non-stick pan over medium-low heat, or heat an electric griddle to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly oil the surface of your pan with coconut oil, butter or cooking spray. If you’re using a non-stick electric griddle, you might not need any oil at all.
Once the surface of the pan is hot enough that a drop of water sizzles on it, pour 1/4 cup of batter onto the pan. Let the pancake cook for about 3 minutes, until bubbles begin to form around the edges of the cake.
Once the underside is lightly golden, flip it with a spatula and cook for another 90 seconds or so, until golden brown on both sides. You may need to adjust the heat up or down at this point. Serve the pancakes immediately or keep warm in a 200 degree Fahrenheit oven.
