I have no data to backup my theory; it’s just a trend that I observed in the past years. The amount of headlines like “10 places you should visit before you die”, “15 best jQuery plugins of the year”, “best video you will watch today” keeps increasing; I blame the rise of social media and the death of RSS readers.

It’s sad to admit it; but if a headline isn’t sensationalist, the likelihood of someone reading it and sharing it, is not as high.

I remember a few years ago, when the first thing I did during the morning was to open NetVibes to check if any of my favorite blogs had a new post. Nowadays the first thing I do is to open Twitter to see if anyone shared an interesting opinion/link. And I know a lot of people that use Reddit and HackerNews for the same reasons.

Somehow I think I wasn’t as influenced by the headlines when it came from some of my favorite sources. It didn’t matter what Jeff Atwood, Steve Yegge, Kangax, Angus Croll, John Resig and so many others published; I always read at least the first paragraphs, since the likelihood of being something I would enjoy was pretty high.

Nowadays I end up reading only what is shared by trusted sources, or posts where the title makes me curious about it. Don’t know if it is just a side effect of the insane amount of information that we have access nowadays (I have over 2000 articles saved for later on Pocket); or if it’s a side-effect of the death of the RSS readers and rise of social media. But I do know that I don’t like what I see. It is really disappointing when a linkbait doesn’t deliver the content, I feel cheated.

Tabloids aren’t trustworthy, the same way that linkbait articles shouldn’t be. Everything that is sensationalist is very likely to be exaggerated just to increase the drama, be it for entertainment or just for selling more copies. – I’m guilty as well.

I have no idea how to solve this problem (and if it needs to be solved), I just hope this trend ends soon.

For many, reading a good book can be a religious experience, but this new bookstore in Zwolle, The Netherlands takes that idea to a whole new level. Architects BK. Architecten were tasked with converting this 15th century Dominican church into a modern bookstore with the addition of 700 square meters of shopping space. But there was one major catch: all the historical elements of the 547-year-old building including stained glass windows, pipe organ, ceiling paintings and expansive arches had to remain intact.

Incredibly, BK. Architecten managed to add three levels of retail space to the side wings of the church in a manner that the entire structure can one day be removed in order to restore the church to its original design. In addition only three colors of building materials were used to mimic the existing palette of the cathedral’s interior to further ensure that the bookstore would pay reverence to the original space.

Sand Prints is a series of ephemeral art created by environmental artist Ahmad Nadalian. Each site-specific piece is a small sculpture naturally blended into a beach or desert landscape. The sculptures become a part of the surrounding land and provide viewers with the opportunity to explore, touch, and even disrupt the final images.

In all of his work, the artist redefines ancient rituals and symbols in contemporary ways. This project is inspired by an ancient printing technique that used carved cylinders to create repeating patterns. Nadalian's modern-day carvings include living creatures like fish, snakes, and crabs, as well as floral patterns that he rolls along the surface of the sand to produce the long rows of repetitive illustrations.

The beauty of each piece is that the loose earth can hold the designs for only so long before the wind disrupts the arrangement or the tide washes it away. Through this fleeting process, Nadalian believes he is making an offering to the Earth, hoping to heal the spirit of our neglected environment. He says, "Art offers a blessing and hope for harmony with the past, with the earth, and the heavens."

NeverWet has been making headlines as the silicon-based spray that repels liquids from clothes and electronics, but this off-book use shows another fascinating application that may be even longer-lasting: urban art invisible until poured upon.

As part of a Home Depot competition, Nathan Sharratt decided to create stencils and spray hydrophobic NeverWet onto streets and sidewalks, resulting in areas of deflected moisture surrounded by soaked concrete. Like invisible ink, the water-repellent areas remain hidden until another liquid is applied.

Given criticism of NeverWet when applied to shoes (apparently it can discolor or leave residue) and phones (touchscreen and durability issues have been reported), this may prove to be a more persistent, if unintended, long-term application of the product.

And for any interested subversive artists, it could prove a unusual boon when bothered by police: how will the authorities justify arresting someone for spraying an invisible coating on a public surface? Meanwhile, best of luck to Nathan in the contest – a win here is surely deserved! As one reader (3AlarmLampscooter) from Reddit noted: there are practical and legal street applications of this too, potentially: “Instead of a sign saying slippery when wet… graffiti saying slippery.” That, and consider: sidewalk happy-hour signs for drink specials in the rain, or way-finding messages for seeking shelter in a storm. Many interesting possibilities.

Short-form instructions for those looking to (officially: don’t!) try this at home or in the neighborhood: “Step 1: You need a stencil. You can do something simple or use an image that includes a fair amount of detail. I created my own stencils from cardboard, but there’s no reason you can’t use a ready-made or store-bought stencil. Just know that NeverWet will get sprayed on that, too. Step 2: Place stencil on concrete. I recommend that you only try this on light-colored concrete for best results. Step 3: Spray the NeverWet into the cut-out areas of your stencil according to the manufacturer’s instructions found on the label. I did two base coats and two top coats.”

This fun piece was painted by illustrator and muralist Mona Caron on Duboce Avenue at Church Street in San Francisco. Titled Manifest Station, the small mural was painted on a standard utility box and has to be viewed from a specific spot so that the horizon lines of the artwork match those of the actual intersection. As an added bonus, a mural in the background which was repainted in part on the utility box is actually an older piece by the same artist. Caron is currently working on a surprisngly great series of weeds and just painted a giant wildflower in Union City. (via CJWHO)

Sorry about that title, I couldn’t help myself. The OB-1 is a new tool made of titanium that’s actually 14 tools in one. And if that wasn’t cool enough, it also fits on your keychain.

Design by Object Three, the tool is designed for everyone, but has a few tools that most active cyclists will appreciate. Here’s a look at all the functions this little piece of equipment can perform:

• 4mm Hex Key (aka Allen Key)
• 5mm Hex Key
• 15mm open wrench (same size as found on bicycle pedals)
• 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11mm box wrenches (within the handle)
• Small flat head screwdriver (helpful for eye/sunglasses)
• Universal spoke wrench (0.139″, fits most bicycle rims)
• Pry Tool (for prying things)
• Packing Tape Cutter (don’t worry, it’s not knife-sharp, it has just enough of an edge to cut packing tape)
• Bottle Opener (we made sure that it pops off caps in one try, and doesn’t just bend them)

Az idei évben a BudapestScenes-brigáddal egyelőre nem sok helyen jártunk még fotózni, aminek a legfőbb oka a csepeli bunkertúra (képek itt, bővebb bemutatóanyag itt, időpontok itt) továbbfejlesztése miatti időhiány volt. Remélhetőleg ez hamarosan változni fog és tudunk menni nagyobb ütemben ismét (egy raklap különleges helyszínről született fotógalériáinkhoz kattints ide), de addig is legalább az előre leegyeztetett helyszíneket mindenképpen be akartuk járni, ezen a listán pedig az első helyen Budapest legmagasabb építményének a bejárása volt - annál is inkább, mert ez már jó ideje húzódik.

Az óbudai FŐTÁV-kéményből való fotózásra másfél éve, 2012 februárjában kaptunk engedélyt, majd egy jó ideig a kémény liftjének a harcképtelensége miatt lett folyamatosan elhalasztva a látogatás, azután pedig az időjárás szólt közbe. Folyamatosan figyeltük az időjárás-előrejelző oldalakat (ami érthető módon néha komoly anyázásokba torkollott), egyszer már le volt egyeztetve egy időpont kora délutánra, de kb. 4 órával a fotózás előtt a Mátyás-templom tornyában állva épp csak a Margitsziget északi csücskéig láttunk el, így ez is le lett stornózva, azóta pedig mi szerencsétlenkedtünk az időpont leegyzetetésével, de most végre minden összejött. Persze végül most is kérdésessé vált, hogy fel tudunk-e menni az erős szél miatt - hiába kör alaprajzú ugyan a kémény, azért a szél így is rendesen bele tud kapaszkodni és ha a szenzorok túl erősnek értékelik a kilengést, akkor a felmenetel szigorúan tilos. A fő cél persze maga a kémény volt, de a mellette fekvő  FŐTÁV hőközpont is érdekes létesítmény (meg hát ugye a kémény is ennek köszönheti a létét), így megnéztük ezt is - bár ahhoz, hogy igazán belemélyedjünk a részletekbe, jóval több idő kellett volna.

A FŐTÁV Zrt. (hivatalosan Budapesti Távhőszolgáltató Zártkörűen Működő Részvénytársaság, mint Budapest egyetlen távhőszolgáltatója manapság 240 000 budapesti lakos számára biztosít fűtést és használati melegvizet.

A fűtőmű kezelőterme

A FŐTÁV a fővárost 2 körzetre bontja: Észak-budapesti- és Dél-budapesti üzemeltetési régióra. Mi az Észak-budai (Kunigunda utcai) fűtőműben jártunk, amely egy 265 km-es vezetékhálózaton és 2 000 hőközponton keresztül több mint 130 000 budapesti lakás fűtését és melegvíz-ellátását biztosítja. Közvetlenül a FŐTÁV-kémény mellett van a cég saját fűtőműve, de ennek a teljesítménye kevés lenne ehhez a feladathoz, így egyrészt a FŐTÁV-nak is van néhány további fűtőműve, másrészt további budapesti ipari létesítmények hulladékhőjét is hasznosítják (Újpesti Erőmű, Rákospalotai Hulladékégető stb.)

A Kunigunda utcai fűtőműben 288 köbméteres térfogatú (6x6 m-es alapterület, 8 m-es magasság) kazánokban van az égéstér. A kazánok most természetesen nem üzemelnek, az időjárás alakulásának függvényében valamikor ősszel indul be a fűtőmű. Ilyenkor csak a 'holtszezonban' szükséges karbantartási munkákat végzik rajta, de ezt komolyan kell venni, mindenképpen biztosítani kell az üzemképes állapotot, ugyanis a fűtőműnek papíron szükség esetén egy órán belül üzembe kell állnia.

A melegvíz forgatását biztosító 1 000 kW teljesítményű keringető szivattyúk egyike.

A kémény 1974-75-ben csúszózsaluzással épült monolit vasbeton szerkezetű építmény (teljes magassága 203 m, ezzel Budapest legmagasabbja). A gázokat jelenleg 2 füstcső vezeti a magasba (2,5 és 1,4 m átmérőjűek) - ezzel a kéménytest kapacitásának kb. a fele van kihasználva, a kéményen kívülről is látszik a korábban tervezett kazánok füstelvezető csöveinek bekötési pontja is.

Persze önmagában a kémény is nagyon érdekes, de alapvetően mégis azért mentünk, hogy a magasból lássuk és fotózhassuk Budapestet. Be is szálltunk a liftbe és felvánszorogtunk a legmagasabb, 195 méteren lévő kilépő platformig. A 'vánszorgás' stimmel, a lift 5 perc alatt tette meg az utat, de nem unatkoztunk: a kémény belseje is lenyűgöző volt a maga nemében, emellett az is kiderült, hogy a felvonót gyártó cseh cég pont annyi lóvét ölt bele a fejlesztésbe/gyártásba, hogy egy magyar nyelvű korrektorra már nem futotta: láttunk néhány érdekes nyelvi fordulatot, ezekkel is elment az idő).

Útközben

A kéményen kívül 4 gyűrű van, ahol a szabadba léphet az ember, de a belső térben jöval több (10-12) platform is van, ahol a liftből ki tudsz szállni.

A szél ereje brutális volt, az embernek pofaszélben tényleg szinte minden erejét be kellett vetnie, hogy előre haladjon - mozgóképen mindez itt látható. Ilyen szélerőnél a kéménynek is kb. fél méteres kilengése van - az nem derült ki, hogy ez a teljes kilengés, vagy csak egy irányba ennyi, de érdekes volt: persze ennyi rugalmasság bőven van a szerkezetben, de amikor fotózás után leértünk a földfelszínre, kicsit még mindig émelyegtünk.

Amikor a lift megáll a legfölső szinten, az ember a kémény belső terébe lép még be, majd egy ajtón keresztül a legfelül körbefutó gyűrűre. A belső térből innen még egy kisebb acéllétrán keresztül ki lehet jutni a kémény legtetejére.

Már a szabadban - fűtési szezonban értelemszerűen itt vezetődik ki a füstgáz a csövekből.

Mivel itt már 200 m-es magasságban vagyunk, természetesen egy raklap átjátszóállomás is van fenn.

A magasságérzet a kémény tetején számomra tetején kettős, félig-meddig volt csak meg. A kémény közvetlen környezetében nagyrészt ipari terület van viszonylag alacsony épületekkel (ill. füves placcok), tehát a magasságkülönbség tényleg csaknem 200 méter - így amikor lenéz az ember, azért erősen érzékeli a nagy magasságkülönbséget.

Pont azért viszont, mert viszonylag külvárosiasabb a környezet és nincsenek a közelben magas épületek, amik viszonyítási pontként szolgálhatnának, az ember inkább térkép-szerűnek érzékeli a várost: inkább úgy érzed, hogy egy hegycsúcson állsz. A Mátyás-templom tornyában vagy épp a csepeli víztorony tetején állva az épületek közelsége miatt így az embernek talán inkább megvan a magasság élménye, hiszen van mihez hasonlítani a magasságot.

Itt a legközelebbi 10 emeletes panelházak légvonalban kb. 500 m-re vannak.

A kémény és a környező épületek közötti magasság-különbséget egy laposabb szögből már jobban lehet érzékelni.

Itt ugye Aquincum-nál vagyunk (a Budapesten megmaradt 2 római amfiteátrum közül a kisebbiktől kb. 700 m-re), nem meglepő tehát, hogy a közvetlenül a kémény alatt nemrég kialakított baseball-pálya területén nemrég sikeres régészeti feltárásokat folytattak.

Mayer Miklós 2011 januári képén a kémény szintén főszerepet játszik, mint az egyetlen látható mesterséges létesítmény: a fotót alig 2 hónapja a NASA 'A nap földtudományi képének' választotta meg (Miklós azt ígéri, elvileg hamarosan elkészül az ominózus hajnalon lőtt anyagból egy timelapse videó - update: készen van, itt érhető el - , de (OFF) addig is nagyon érdemes megnézni a fantasztikus videóit !

We’re pleased to announce that The Old Reader will officially remain open to the public! The application now has a bigger team, significantly more resources, and a new corporate entity in the United States. We’re incredibly excited to be a part of this great web application and would like to share some details about its future as well as thank you for remaining loyal users. We’re big fans and users of The Old Reader and look forward to helping it grow and improve for years to come.

First off we want to say that it’s rare to have an application that inspires as much passion as The Old Reader has as of late. We think that’s a sign of greatness and all credit for that goes to the wonderful team that has been running the show including Dmitry and Elena. We’ve gotten to know them pretty well this past week and they are smart, honest, and passionate people. We’re happy to announce that they are still a part of the team and we hope they will be for a long time to come.  The new team will be managing the project and adding to the engineering, communications, and system administration functions.

So now for the future. The Old Reader is going to retain all of its functionality and remain open to the public. Not only that, we’re going to do everything in our power to grow the user base which will only accentuate the things that make this application special. To facilitate these improvements, we’re going to be transitioning The Old Reader to a top tier hosting facility in the United States this coming week. It’s going to require some downtime and for that we sincerely apologize, but it’s also going to mean A LOT more servers, 10x faster networks, and long-term stability. We realize that doesn’t make the downtime easy but rest assured that things are looking up.

Over the coming weeks we’ll talk more about the new team of The Old Reader. We’re looking forward to introducing ourselves and making significant improvements to this incredible application. Thanks for reading and thanks for using The Old Reader!
